Hail on the edges, wind at the centre
Okotoks has mostly been on the fringe of the big Calgary hailstorms. On August 5, 2024, when north Calgary took hail the size of hen’s eggs, Environment Canada’s reports from Okotoks were nickel-size. That does not mean Okotoks roofs are safe from hail. The town sits in the region forecasters call Hailstorm Alley, which runs from High River north to central Alberta, and storms that build over the foothills can hit any part of it.
The bigger day-to-day threat in Okotoks is wind. Chinooks pour off the foothills with strong, gusty winds, especially in winter. On roofs we see:
- creased or torn shingles along the top edge of a course
- missing ridge and hip caps
- lifted shingles at rake edges and around dormers
- small hail damage made worse by wind lifting already-weakened shingles
Okotoks homes and roofs
Okotoks has grown quickly, with communities like Drake Landing, Cimarron, D’Arcy, Air Ranch and Westmount adding many two-storey homes with large roofs. Many still have their original builder-grade architectural shingles. Older parts of town, around downtown and the Sheep River, include bungalows and split-levels on their second or third roof.
Some Drake Landing homes still have solar collectors on their garage roofs from the community’s solar heating project. If yours does, we work around them and note any hail damage to the panels for your claim.
Downtown and older Okotoks
Okotoks is one of the oldest towns in the Calgary region. The older streets near downtown and along the Sheep River include character homes, bungalows from the 1950s to 1970s, and houses that have been added onto over decades. These roofs often have plank decking instead of plywood, older chimney flashing, and two layers of shingles. We price deck work, extra tear-off layers and chimney re-flashing up front so there are no surprises once the old roof is off.
Timing a re-roof around chinook season
Winter re-roofing is possible in Okotoks, but chinook winds and cold make it harder to seal shingles properly. If your roof is sound but near the end of its life, late spring through early fall gives the best results, and booking before June avoids the post-storm rush. If you have an active leak or storm damage, we don’t wait. We make the repair or tarp it, and plan the full job for the first good weather window.
Small hail on older roofs
Hail around Okotoks is often smaller than in north Calgary, but small hail still matters on an older roof. Shingles that have already lost granules to 15 or 20 years of sun are brittle, and pea- or nickel-size hail can knock off what’s left and expose the mat. If your roof is that age and you see granules in the eavestroughs after a storm, an inspection will tell you whether it’s hail damage, normal ageing, or both.
