Calgary Hail Roof Repair

Impact-Resistant Roofing in Calgary

Impact-resistant roofing in Calgary means shingles rated Class 4 under the UL 2218 test: they survive a 2-inch steel ball dropped twice on the same spot without cracking. In a city that files hail claims most summers, a Class 4 roof cuts the odds you will be re-roofing after the next storm, and some Alberta insurers discount premiums for it.

Why Class 4 matters in Calgary

Calgary is in the middle of Alberta’s hail corridor. The August 5, 2024 storm drove more than 130,000 insurance claims, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada says Alberta has had at least one major hailstorm every year for two decades. Many homes in the northeast have been re-roofed twice since 2020.

Standard shingles are not built for that. A Class 4 shingle has a more flexible, rubberized asphalt (often SBS-modified) or a reinforced backing that absorbs impacts that would crack a standard shingle’s mat.

How the UL 2218 test works

The test drops steel balls of increasing size onto a shingle sample installed on a deck. Each ball hits the same spot twice.

RatingSteel ball diameterWhat it roughly represents
Class 11¼ inchSmall hail
Class 21½ inchWalnut-size hail
Class 31¾ inchGolf-ball-size hail
Class 42 inchHail larger than a golf ball

To earn Class 4, the shingle must show no crack in the surface or the back after the 2-inch drops. Ask to see the product’s listing, not just a marketing badge.

What Class 4 does and doesn’t do for you

What it does:

  • resists the hail sizes that cause most Calgary roof claims
  • reduces the chance of leaks after a storm, so less interior damage
  • may lower your premium with some insurers
  • is often a selling point when you list the house

What it doesn’t do:

  • guarantee you will never need a claim again (very large hail still causes damage)
  • get paid for automatically by your insurer
  • fix a poor installation (nailing, ventilation and flashing still matter)

Getting a discount, if your insurer offers one

  1. Call your broker before you choose. Ask whether they discount Class 4 roofs, how much, and what proof they accept.
  2. Keep the invoice, the product name and the manufacturer’s Class 4 listing. We include them in your completion package.
  3. Send them to your insurer once the roof is done. Discounts are not always applied automatically.

Class 4 options we install

We install Class 4 asphalt shingle lines from major manufacturers available in Calgary, and Class 4-rated metal roofing panels. Colour and profile choices are similar to standard architectural shingles. We bring samples to the inspection.

For a deeper look at whether the upgrade pays off for your situation, read our Class 4 shingles guide.

Installation details that keep a Class 4 roof working

The Class 4 rating comes from a lab test on a shingle installed over a solid deck. On your roof, three things decide whether you get that performance:

  • A solid, sound deck. Soft or delaminated sheathing lets the shingle flex too much on impact. We replace damaged sheets during tear-off.
  • The right nailing. Impact-resistant shingles still need the manufacturer’s nailing pattern, especially the high-wind schedule for chinooks.
  • Matching accessories. Hip, ridge and starter products from the same system. A Class 4 field with standard ridge cap leaves the ridge, the most exposed part of the roof, as the weak point.

Upgrading during an insurance claim: how the paperwork works

Upgrading to Class 4 during a hail claim is common and straightforward:

  1. Your adjuster’s estimate covers replacement with like kind and quality, usually standard architectural shingles.
  2. Our quote shows two figures: the insurer’s scope, and the extra cost of the Class 4 upgrade.
  3. You pay your deductible plus the upgrade difference. The insurer pays its scope as normal.
  4. When the job is done, we give you the invoice and the product’s Class 4 listing to send to your broker for any premium discount.

The upgrade must be shown openly on the contract. It should never be hidden inside the insurance estimate.

Which Calgary homes benefit most

  • Northeast and northwest Calgary, where many homes have been re-roofed after both the 2020 and 2024 storms
  • Airdrie, Strathmore and Chestermere, on open terrain where wind-driven hail hits harder
  • Homes you plan to keep for seven years or more, long enough to benefit from fewer claims and any premium discount
  • Two-storey homes with large west-facing slopes, which take the brunt of most storms

Frequently asked questions

What does Class 4 impact-resistant mean?

It is the top rating in the UL 2218 test. Steel balls from 1.25 to 2 inches are dropped onto a shingle sample, twice in the same spot. A Class 4 product shows no crack or tear after the 2-inch ball. Class 3 passes at 1.75 inches. Only Class 4 is commonly called impact-resistant.

Will Class 4 shingles survive any hailstorm?

No roof is hail-proof. Hail larger than 2 inches, or wind-driven stones, can still damage Class 4 shingles, and cosmetic marks are possible. In most Calgary storms they hold up far better than standard shingles, which means fewer leaks and fewer claims.

Do insurers in Alberta give a discount for Class 4 shingles?

Some do, and the amount varies by insurer. A study done for the Insurance Bureau of Canada estimated that homeowners in high-risk hail areas who install hail-resistant roofing and siding could cut premiums substantially. Ask your broker for their exact discount and what proof they need before you choose.

Will insurance pay for Class 4 shingles after a hail claim?

Usually only if your old roof was already Class 4. Policies pay to replace like kind and quality. If you are upgrading, you normally pay the difference. We quote the insurer's like-for-like scope and the upgrade cost separately.

How much more do Class 4 shingles cost in Calgary?

It depends on the product line and roof size. On a typical Calgary house the upgrade usually adds a few thousand dollars to the replacement. We quote both options side by side so you can weigh the extra cost against any premium discount.

Is there still a City of Calgary rebate for impact-resistant roofs?

The City's Resilient Roofing Rebate paid $3,000 toward Class 4 roofs but ended in 2022. Councillors and the Insurance Bureau of Canada have since called for it to return. Check calgary.ca before you sign, in case a new program opens.

  • Class 4 Impact-Resistant Roofing in Strathmore

The August 5, 2024 storm did not stop at Calgary's city limits. One of its most damaging cells crossed north Calgary and then Strathmore, where golf-ball-size hail was reported. • Class 4 Impact-Resistant Shingles: Are They Worth It in Calgary?

For most Calgary homeowners replacing a roof anyway, Class 4 shingles are worth pricing. They resist the hail sizes that cause most claims here, may earn an insurance discount, and reduce the odds of another full replacement after the next storm. The upgrade is usually your cost, not the insurer's, so the answer depends on how long you'll stay and what your insurer offers.

  • Roof Replacement Cost in Calgary: 2026 Price Guide

Most asphalt shingle roof replacements in Calgary cost between about $8,000 and $26,000 in 2026. Where your house lands in that range depends on roof area, pitch, how many layers come off, the condition of the deck, and the shingle you choose. Metal roofs cost more. After hail, insurance often covers most of it.
