On the edge of Calgary’s hail corridor
Chestermere borders the northeast Calgary communities that took the worst of the June 2020 and August 2024 hailstorms. Severe storms in this region usually move west to east, so storms that have already battered Calgary often pass over or near Chestermere and the lake on their way out.
Published insured-loss figures are reported for the Calgary area as a whole, so there is no official street-by-street count for Chestermere. That is exactly why we inspect slope by slope and photograph every hit: your claim depends on what is on your roof, not on a headline.
Chestermere homes and roofs
Most of Chestermere has been built since the early 2000s, with fast growth in communities like Kinniburgh, Westmere, Rainbow Falls, Dawson’s Landing and Chelsea. Common features we work with:
- two-storey homes with large, multi-plane roofs and steep front gables
- builder-grade architectural shingles reaching 10 to 20 years old
- lakefront and lake-view homes in areas like Lakepointe and The Cove, exposed to wind across the water
- newer homes with community colour guidelines
Wind across the lake
Homes facing Chestermere Lake catch wind with nothing to break it. On roofs, that means more lifted and creased shingles, lost ridge caps and pulled flashing on the lake side. We install with the manufacturer’s high-wind nailing pattern and check that starter strip and edge details are done to specification.
Older lakeside homes
Chestermere began as a summer village of cottages around the lake, and some of those properties have since been converted to year-round homes or rebuilt. Older lakeside houses often have additions built at different times, low-slope sections, more than one layer of shingles, and roof decks of mixed age. Those details change the price of a re-roof and are easy to miss in a quick quote. We check every roof plane and list tear-off layers and deck replacement separately in writing.
Community guidelines and HOAs
Several newer Chestermere communities have architectural guidelines covering roof colour and material, and some lakefront areas have their own residents’ associations. If you’re switching colours, moving to metal, or upgrading to a Class 4 line, check the rules first. We can provide product names and colour samples for any approval you need.
After a storm moves through
Because storms often reach Chestermere after crossing Calgary, there’s usually a little warning. Afterwards, walk the lake-facing and west-facing sides of the house first. Check dented eavestroughs, torn screens and siding damage. Then book a free hail roof inspection if you see anything. If your neighbours are getting roofs replaced, it’s worth a look even if yours seems fine: damage can stop at the property line, or it can be hidden on slopes you can’t see from the street.
