Twice in four years
On June 13, 2020, a storm dropped tennis-ball-size hail on northeast Calgary in a matter of minutes. Siding was shredded, windows were smashed and roofs were destroyed across Saddle Ridge, Taradale, Skyview Ranch and Redstone. The Insurance Bureau of Canada put insured damage at about $1.2 billion, with more than 70,000 claims.
On August 5, 2024, it happened again. A supercell crossed north Calgary with hail up to hen’s-egg size. Redstone and nearby communities saw siding punctured and roofs pummelled, and the Calgary Fire Department responded to dozens of weather calls concentrated in the northeast. CatIQ’s final estimate for that storm is about $3.35 billion, the most expensive hailstorm in Canadian history.
That history changes how we approach northeast roofs.
What we see on NE Calgary roofs
Repeat damage on newer roofs. Many roofs replaced in 2020 and 2021 were hit again in 2024. Some owners assume a new roof could not be damaged so soon. It can, and it is a new claim.
Shingle and siding damage together. Vinyl siding on the west and north faces often shows the most obvious damage. When we see holes in the siding, we expect bruised shingles on the matching roof slopes.
Two-storey homes with steep sections. Many NE homes are two storeys with steep front gables. Steep-pitch and two-storey labour should be in the insurer’s estimate. We check that it is.
Original builder-grade shingles. Homes built in the early 2000s in Martindale, Taradale and Coventry Hills may still have original roofs. Hail on a 20-year-old roof sometimes leads to depreciation questions, which is why documentation matters.
Class 4 is a serious option here
If your house has been through two hail claims, an impact-resistant Class 4 roof is worth comparing. You typically pay the upgrade difference, and some insurers offer a premium discount. We quote standard and Class 4 side by side.
Watch out for door knockers
After the 2020 and 2024 storms, the northeast saw more door-to-door contractors than anywhere else in the city. Before signing anything at the door, read our storm-chaser checklist. In short: ask for a Service Alberta prepaid contracting licence before paying any deposit, and never sign over your insurance cheque.
Book an inspection in the northeast
We inspect northeast roofs most days in storm season. Book a free hail roof inspection or call [403-XXX-XXXX]. If your claim is already open, add the claim number to the form and we will put it on your report.
