The storm
On Sunday, July 13, 2025, a severe storm moved across north Calgary with toonie-size hail, heavy rain and strong winds. Trees came down, streets and some homes flooded, and roofs and siding were damaged.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada’s first estimate, using CatIQ data, put insured damage at about $92 million, with vehicles accounting for 65% of claims. In September 2025 that figure was revised to $164 million, a 78% jump driven largely by commercial claims.
CatIQ noted the storm tracked just south of the path of the August 5, 2024 storm, so many homes in north Calgary were hit for the second summer in a row.
Why many roofs were never checked
This storm came less than a year after the record 2024 storm, when crews were still working through the backlog. Some homeowners assumed their roof had already been dealt with, or that a toonie-size storm could not matter. In practice:
- roofs replaced after 2024 can be damaged again, and that is a new claim
- roofs that were not replaced after 2024 may have damage from both storms
- toonie-size hail (about 2.8 cm) can bruise standard asphalt shingles, especially when driven by wind
Telling 2024 damage from 2025 damage
If your roof was hit in both storms and never replaced, your insurer will want to know which damage came from which event. It isn’t always possible to separate them precisely, but there are clues:
- Fresh hits show sharp edges and dark, exposed asphalt or mat.
- Older hits have weathered, rounded edges, and the exposed spot may have darkened or started to erode further.
- Soft metal dents of different sizes on the same vent can point to more than one storm.
A roofer can describe what they see, but the insurer decides how to treat it. Report both storm dates if both may apply, and let the evidence speak.
What to do now

- Book a free hail roof inspection if you see anything, or if your roof has not been on anyone’s ladder since 2024.
- If there is damage, report it with the storm date. Read how to file a hail claim in Alberta.
